Old Mill
Goostrey, Cheshire

We were commissioned to reimagine the internal arrangement and stylistic approach of Old Mill, a historic building with a layered past, with the aim of enhancing its spatial quality and establishing a stronger connection to the rear garden.

Originally constructed circa 1780 during the Late Georgian period, the mill functioned as a working water mill until the mid-20th century. In 1950, the waterwheel and milling apparatus were removed, marking a shift in use to agricultural storage — specifically, for cheese. A subsequent conversion in the 1970s saw the building adapted into a private residence. However, interventions from that era introduced an eclectic, Dickensian-inspired aesthetic that neither aligned with the building’s Georgian roots nor its industrial character.

Our approach sought to strip back these anachronistic features, both internally and externally, in order to re-establish a dialogue with the building’s original architectural language. Working closely with the client, we developed a refined and restrained aesthetic — one that celebrates the mill’s inherent character while integrating modern spatial interventions.

Key Interventions

  • A comprehensive internal reconfiguration to create open-plan living spaces, improving natural light, flow, and visual connectivity.

  • Sensitive restoration of historical elements, alongside the removal of incongruous features from previous alterations.

  • Introduction of a contemporary terrace and balcony, designed to harmonise with the existing structure while providing a fluid transition to the landscaped rear garden.

The result is a thoughtful balance between old and new — a home that feels grounded in its history, yet reimagined for modern living.
